Load feeder design made easy

The switching and protection devices required to operate the motor dependent on the mechanical load and until now had to be determined with reference to the SIRIUS Configuration Manual or by searching the catalog. This was followed by a search for suitable variants with the correct control voltage and type of connection, and the necessary auxiliary contacts.

This is now easier, because with the Electrical designer function in the TIA Selection Tool, you can quickly and reliably find the right switching and protection devices for your electrical load, e.g. for motors, fans, heating or even user-defined loads – including suitable accessories.

Until now, you have ensured compliance with standards by selecting the right device combinations as usual using product catalogs, manuals, certificates and standard requirements.

If you use our Electrical designer software to determine the components, you can be sure that they are dimensioned according to the applicable standards (IEC 60204-1).

It includes all the important requirements of the IEC standards areas that are relevant for dimensioning the electrical components of a machine (including the appropriate wire sizes for IEC, as well as the relevant short-circuit values in the circuit).

Switchgear selection for load feeders according to IEC standards

When determining the cable cross-section, many constraints must be taken into account. The cable also has to carry the current safely under overload and short-circuit conditions. Furthermore, the voltage drop must not be too large and the minimum short-circuit current not too small so that the motor can be safely switched and also safely shut down in the event of a malfunction.

Finally, the standard IEC 60204-1 specifies the minimum requirements for electrical safety for the protection of the machine, drives, and operator. However, additional standards such as IEC 60364, IEC 61439, IEC 60909 (short-circuit calculations) or VDE 0100 also have to be consulted frequently.

The Electrical designer in the TIA Selection Tool determines the appropriate cable cross-section inside and outside the control cabinet at the push of a button – and everything according to the required standards. Parameters such as the cable installation method or ambient temperatures can be selected freely to dimension the cable as optimally as possible for the prevailing conditions.

As part of the risk assessment of electrical equipment for machines, IEC 60204-1 also makes short-circuit consideration mandatory.
