The need for Digital Product Passport

Global industries face increasing challenges related to resource scarcity, environmental impact, and sustainable value creation. At the same time, complex supply chains and the lack of standardized product information create significant barriers to transparency, traceability, and circularity. This calls for a fundamental transformation in how product data is managed and exchanged across the entire lifecycle.

What is a Digital Product Passport?

A Digital Product Passport (DPP) is a standardized digital record that captures a product’s information across its entire lifecycle, from composition and manufacturing to use, reuse, and end-of-life. It creates a single source of truth, enabling companies to access, manage, and share reliable product data across the value chain. Driven by EU regulation, Digital Product Passports will become mandatory step by step, starting with batteries from February 2027 and expanding to additional product categories such as electronics, textiles and more under the Ecodesign framework. Digital Product Passports enable companies to meet these requirements, while improving supply chain transparency and supporting more sustainable and circular business processes.

The Battery Passport
As the first regulated implementation of the Digital Product Passport in 2027, the Battery Passport sets the foundation for how DPPs will be designed and applied across industries. It defines concrete requirements for product data, around 100 data points including material composition, carbon footprint, performance and lifecycle information, all linked to a unique identifier accessible via a data carrier such as a QR code. Beyond compliance, it establishes a new level of transparency and traceability across the battery value chain, involving manufacturers, suppliers, recyclers and authorities. As such, the Battery Passport serves as a blueprint for future Digital Product Passports across other product categories.
