Siemens Energy delivers advanced solutions for power generation and transmission. Over 4,600 employees work on turbines, generators, service, sales, and gas turbine technology in Mülheim/Ruhr. An energy-saving program aims to sustainably cut CO₂ emissions and energy use.

Efficient power plant construction on the Ruhr

Siemens Energy provides leading-edge products and solutions for power generation and transmission. More than 4,600 employees build turbines and generators at the production site in Mülheim/Ruhr, work in assembly, service and sales as well as in gas turbine technology. Siemens' energy-saving program is now intended to sustainably reduce CO2 emissions and energy consumption at the site.

Challenge

Siemens AG wants to be the first of the world's largest industrial companies to be CO2-neutral by 2030. So far, the company has produced about 2.2 million tons of carbon dioxide per year. A large part of the emissions comes from production, so there is a high savings potential here. For this reason, the heat and energy supply of large locations such as Mülheim/Ruhr is to be comprehensively modernised and optimised. The goal is to think holistically. The energy-saving program not only improves heat and energy generation, but also the measurement, control and regulation technology is replaced, expanded and, thanks to a high degree of networking, designed to be more transparent and future-proof.

Solution

The heart of the energy optimisation is a new combined heat and power plant with a nominal electrical output of 1,189 kW and a thermal output of 1,195 kW. Compared to conventional, separate heat and energy generation, the modern system saves up to 26.8 percent energy. The measurement, control and regulation technology within the system will be converted to Desigo PX, expanded with additional data points and integrated into the building management system underI follow CCintegrated. Optimised room air control in the kitchen with Kitchen Air Flow, new LED lighting and compressed air optimisation are also part of the efficiency package.

Benefit

The holistic energy-saving program not only minimizes CO2 emissions and energy consumption. The site's fresh water consumption is also significantly reduced. A Green Building Monitor illustrates the benefits and savings for employees. In addition, Siemens Energy will save around €1.4 million in energy costs per year after the comprehensive modernization. In addition, there is less maintenance and repair costs. The investment costs of a good 4 million euros will thus pay for themselves after just under 3 years.

Thanks to Siemens' extensive energy-saving program, we will not only save a lot of money in operations at the Mülheim/Ruhr site in the future, but will also significantly minimize our CO2 footprint and thus contribute to Siemens' 2030 climate target.
