What saving energy has to do with healing
Together with Siemens, the Bremerhaven-Reinkenheide Clinic modernized the building and plant technology – financed by energy performance contracting, which offsets the investments against the savings.
A lot of healing success with little energy expenditure
Doctors, nursing staff and medical technology make a decisive contribution to the success of healing. Also the building and plant technology. Because it stands for safe care and pleasant conditions for patients and staff. This is also the case at the Bremerhaven Hospital. The municipal acute care hospital of maximum care has 14 clinics, an institute and a medical care center. Around 1,900 employees work in the 723-bed hospital. The clinic operator benefits from the energy performance contracting project with Siemens.
Challenge
After almost 30 years of operation, the technical systems from the 1970s no longer corresponded to the current state of the art. For example, the Klinikum Bremerhaven-Reinkenheide gGmbH decided to modernize the energy efficiency of the company, combined with an energy-saving contracting. The highlight: The investment costs are refinanced in a twelve-year main service phase via the energy savings. Siemens guarantees this and at the same time ensures that the systems are continuously optimized.
Solution
After a comprehensive needs analysis, Siemens modernized or renewed the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, the building management system, the secure power supply, and the sterile and kitchen technology, among other things. A total of around 120 individual measures were implemented and an energy data management system with more than 100 meters was set up. Numerous innovative ideas contributed to successful energy saving. Example: A load management system of the Desigo building management system shifts the load peaks for electricity to off-peak times.
Benefit
The more than nine million euros in initial investments in energy-saving measures were refinanced with the savings in energy costs contractually guaranteed by Siemens. In total, the municipal hospital saved around 12.5 million euros in energy costs in the main service phase. To this end, carbon dioxide emissions have been reduced by more than 42,400 tonnes. An advantageous side effect: The award of the BUND with the "Energy-Saving Hospital" seal of approval – and more satisfied employees and patients.
The savings achieved have far exceeded expectations and forecasts. Thanks to the continuous optimization in the course of energy performance contracting, we are now saving 40 percent more energy compared to the time of modernization.
