Smart fire protection for student campus

Learn how Siemens Solution Partner Bonlec implemented advanced fire detection at James Cook University, ensuring reliable protection, operational efficiency and future-ready campus safety with Siemens Cerberus Pro and ASA Technology.

Fire Protection for Student Accommodation at James Cook University

Customer objectives

As international student numbers continue to grow across Australia, universities are expanding their on-campus accommodation to meet increasing demand. James Cook University (JCU), a leading research institution with campuses in Cairns, Townsville, and Singapore, recently developed a new 300-bed student accommodation facility on its Cairns campus.

With self-contained student apartments that include kitchen and shower facilities, the university required a fire detection solution capable of distinguishing real fire incidents from everyday activities such as cooking or steam generation. The objective was to provide reliable, automatic fire protection while minimizing false alarms and ensuring long-term operational efficiency in the tropical climate of North Queensland.

Solution and services

To address these challenges, JCU partnered with Siemens Solution Partner Bonlec, a leading provider of HVAC and fire safety solutions in North Queensland.

The new accommodation building was equipped with the Siemens Cerberus® Pro fire safety system, featuring advanced ASA Technology™ detectors throughout the facility. ASA Technology analyzes multiple fire indicators simultaneously, enabling highly accurate fire detection even in environments where smoke, steam, or cooking fumes are common.

Each apartment was fitted with an ASA Technology detector and a sounder base. During a pre-alarm event, the system alerts only the occupant of the affected room, while confirmed fire incidents trigger building-wide alarms to ensure rapid evacuation and response.

To further enhance performance in the region's tropical conditions, Siemens detector base seals were installed to help reduce issues caused by condensation and insect ingress, supporting reliable operation and reducing maintenance requirements.

The Cerberus Pro platform also provides a scalable foundation for future building expansion and evolving safety requirements.

Customer benefits

By implementing Siemens fire safety technology, James Cook University benefits from:

  • Reliable fire detection in challenging accommodation environments with kitchens and shower facilities.
  • Significant reduction in false alarms minimizing unnecessary evacuations and disruptions for students and staff.
  • Enhanced occupant safety through early and accurate detection of real fire events.
  • Lower operating costs by reducing time and resources associated with false alarms.

Improved system reliability in tropical conditions through protection against condensation and insect intrusion.

Higher education
