Chicago O’Hare International Airport

Discover how Siemens Desigo CC integrates building automation systems at Chicago O’Hare Terminal 3 to improve passenger comfort, optimize HVAC performance and reduce energy and operating costs.

Chicago O’Hare International Airport, USA

Serving 70 million passengers a year, Chicago O’Hare International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the world – and with seven runways and a total of 178 gates, also one of the largest. The airport is among the most important transportation nodes in North America and a main hub for many international airlines.

Challenge

Terminal 3’s complex heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) infrastructure includes a blend of different building automation systems from a variety of manufacturers. The airport wanted to integrate these systems into a uniform system to ensure maximum building comfort and minimal energy costs. Siemens had been active in other parts of the airport for years with Total Building Solutions, such as for access control, so it only made sense that the operators contact Siemens.

Solution

Desigo CC from Siemens fit bill, and Terminal 3 at O’Hare subsequently became the first building in the United States to benefit from the solution. Desigo CC is based on software and serves as the main interface for controlling all building automation tasks and subsystems in Terminal 3. Above all, consistently optimized climate conditions translate into real comfort for passengers – without them being aware of the technology running in the background. In addition, Desigo CC ensures consistently low energy consumption.

Benefits

Desigo CC is simple to use and the web-based interface allows for quick access to all required information at all times. If a tenant complains about the temperature in a certain part of the building, for example, with Desigo CC service personnel can access data for the area in question and determine the cause of the problem. It takes just a few minutes and minimal effort to correct the error.Desigo CC also helps optimize building performance using the patented Comparative Trend View feature. It compares trends over two different time periods based on the saved data and optimizes the building’s energy consumption. Desigo CC not only guarantees virtually trouble-free operations, it also dramatically cuts the energy and operating costs of the terminal. Thanks to Desigo CC, the airport operators do not need to worry about the future; they can scale the system and add new features as needed. For example, the fire detection and security systems in Terminal 3 have already been connected to Desigo CC.

Feldschlösschen brewery, Switzerland, Fire safety system

The building is the beer

  • Over 140 years ago, Feldschlösschen was founded with one vision. To make Switzerland’s finest beer.
  • With heat an everyday reality, the fire detection systems have to recognize what is dangerous and what is simply the normal workings of the brewery.
  • The best way of keeping tradition alive: protect it with the most modern fire safety system.
