thyssenkrupp comes from a long industrial tradition. With its quarter, the company has built a remarkable headquarters in Essen. Spread over 13 buildings and 100,000 square meters of office space, the campus offers several thousand employees a state-of-the-art workplace.
The headquarters is not only architecturally impressive, but also technically state-of-the-art. Together with Siemens, thyssenkrupp is developing its headquarters into a pioneer in the field of sustainability. The goal: a completely climate-neutral campus. This is achieved through smart management of the building control system, with which errors are detected immediately and rectified just as quickly. The results of efficient building operation are already visible.
We are a benchmark in the market when it comes to the energy efficiency of our buildings. Together with Siemens, we have been able to save 35 percent electricity and 14 percent thermal energy so far. We will continue on this path in partnership.
The basis for the savings is the widely installed Siemens hardware. Countless data points are brought together in real time in a Siemens cloud solution and processed with the support of AI. The analysis is carried out in the background by Siemens experts, who continuously monitor thyssenkrupp's plants as part of a remote service. If irregularities occur, they are detected and processed immediately. A large part of the disruptions can be rectified by an intervention from a distance.
Facility management was a challenge with a campus of this size. An enormous number of technical systems and sensors also meant many potential sources of error. Detecting and resolving all faults promptly was a complicated task for technical facility management at thyssenkrupp. With the introduction of Siemens solutions, facility managers can now identify where malfunctions occur and resolve them immediately at the touch of a button. The Siemens Remote Team, which monitors the building technology in the background around the clock and proactively initiates measures, also helps with this. Problems are fixed before they cause damage. Systems can be optimized and maintained remotely – thus relieving the thyssenkrupp FM team.
As part of thyssenkrupp's sustainability efforts, building operations play a crucial role. This is because almost 40% of the CO₂ consumption in the company comes from the buildings. With the help of Siemens systems, thyssenkrupp was able to create comprehensive transparency on consumption in the first step. In the second step, potential savings were identified and targeted measures were implemented. With the goal firmly in sight: a CO₂-neutral district.
The pandemic has had a lasting impact on the work culture in Germany – a hybrid working model is also practiced at thyssenkrupp. Only part of the working time is spent in the office, which creates open spaces. thyssenkrupp is now opening its campus to other companies. The open structure of the quarter is intended to promote exchange and cross-company cooperation. A start-up incubator is also being planned. The newly established companies also benefit from sustainable office buildings and an attractive infrastructure. Siemens is supporting thyssenkrupp in the technical restructuring of its buildings in its transformation into a multi-corporate campus.
The so-called "Q1" is the largest building in the district. This is also where the executive floor of thyssenkrupp is located.
