To offer an effective and efficient mobility ecosystem in a city while transportation demands continue to increase, requires a more holistic approach of how mobility is managed. This is not only relevant within a city (urban) but is equally relevant between cities (inter-urban). At the same time, disruptive new and emerging technologies are changing the perception we have of mobility, opening up many new and exciting opportunities.

Connected vehicles sending data in real-time, infrastructure systems transmitting their status to Siemens’ Internet-of-Things platform MindSphere and road users who are connected with their smart phones all produce an immense amount of data. This rich and growing source of data is changing the types of services that are feasible.

We work closely on your specific use cases and believe in the high value of a co-creation approach with you, our customer.

In the first phase, we listen closely to understand your challenges and investigate the respective processes and workflows. In the ideation phase, we develop a vision and collect the first requirements for a data-driven solution to your problem. Then, we work towards a first concrete representation of the solution, to give you a notion of the planned functionality and let you experience the value to and effect on your business – be it a paper-based draft, a mock-up or even a working prototype.

 

We then jointly decide whether to start the development towards an operational Minimal Viable Product (MVP), delivering the core functionality. Over the whole process, we live by the philosophy "fail fast, learn fast", hence we conduct rapid prototyping with our customers to build quickly towards a Minimal Viable Product that provides unique value early on, and to decide in short cycles how to proceed. Building on the MVP, we may jointly decide to further enhance the solution or service in alignment with your needs and continuously integrate it into your operating environment.

 

This allows smart cities to get into the driver’s seat and be part of the development of the right solution that empowers system operators and traffic engineers to make smarter decisions and actively manage the city’s mobility systems, meet increasing mobility demands and reduce its negative effects rather than reacting to an increasingly uncoordinated development of different emerging mobility players.

 

MindSphere and artificial intelligence

To generate unique insights, and to develop and operate respective solutions we rely on Siemens' powerful IoT operating system, MindSphere. MindSphere is the Platform as a Service (PaaS) that enables us to use cutting edge technologies in all areas from connectivity (“Connected Technology”), data collection and preparation all the way to data analytics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence in order to provide applications or services that empower your business in the age of the digital transformation. At the same time MindSphere ensures the highest cyber security standards that you already know and trust from Siemens ITS.

Furthermore, MindSphere is the platform that enables you to connect to organizations in other domains that are relevant for your city (“Connected Organization”) such as: building technology, power management and rail, or to other cities, in order to gain best-in-class or benchmark insights into mobility systems. You may not only want to use data from other domains, but generate even more value for you by sharing data, e.g. to enable other companies, including start-ups, to develop applications and services in a safe, professional and managed environment (“Connected Ecosystem”). It is all under your control with the latest IT security standards and authorization procedures, allowing you to be fully protected and only share what you intend to.

We create a Minimal Viable Product (MVP) in a staged co-creation process with our customers. We involve and work with our customers closely in short cycles to ensure that the MVP delivers the highest possible value for them.

We start the innovation process by understanding pain points and the underlying problems as the crucial base upon which to develop a suitable and sustainable solution. This is typically achieved in joint workshops where we enhance transparency about our customers’ visions and challenges to define a problem statement. 

In addition, to gain even more insights there is the possibility to start a customer learning process. In this phase, an expert from our team accompanies key stakeholders involved in the respective processes, follows them through their daily work and conducts interviews to identify where issues lie and where improvements can be made through data-driven applications and services.

Ideation is the first creational step towards a solution for our customer’s problem. It is based on the problem statement and aims to jointly develop a vision of the solution and the initial requirements. In this and the previous phase, we leverage state-of-the-art approaches such as Design Thinking. We jointly synthesize and prioritize the different ideas in order to arrive at one coherent vision of a solution.  Close customer collaboration is crucial for successfully creating a vision as it sets the ground and provides guidance for a fruitful process.

Once we have developed the vision and requirements, we work towards a first concrete representation of the solution. This gives you a notion of the planned functionality and lets you experience the value to and effect on your business – be it a paper-based draft, a mock-up or even a first prototype. This gives us the opportunity to specify the very core of its functionality, review if the solution is effective at addressing the agreed use cases and allows any required changes to be made at an early stage before entering the next phase of the rapid prototyping process. After the experience journey we then jointly decide whether we want to start the development towards an MVP.

During the rapid prototyping co-creation process, our team from the ITS Digital Lab and our customers collaborate closely to create a Minimal Viable Product (MVP) delivering the core functionality. Over the whole process, we live by the philosophy "fail fast, learn fast", hence we conduct rapid prototyping with our customers to build quickly towards a MVP that is operational and brings value from an early stage. We incorporate our customer in our Agile SCRUM team working in sprints of two to four weeks to create the solution. As part of this process, we regularly review the progress together with our customer and jointly decide, in short iterations, what the next steps are, taking into account the expected value add and feasibility.

 

The common goal is to generate a Minimal Viable Product (MVP) that provides unique value to our customer. Building on the MVP, we may jointly decide to further enhance the solution or service in alignment with your needs and to continuously integrate it into your operational environment as a service provided by Siemens ITS.

For now you can follow the link to our project in Lisbon where the ITS Digital lab developed the operator system with the major feature of predicting bike and station usage, using artificial intelligence, in order to support optimal availability of bikes for Lisbon’s inhabitants.
