Sustainable Development of the Power Industry

Life-Saving Power

In the modern world people need electricity everywhere and always, and even more so in the far North. It is impossible to survive without electricity in extreme climate conditions and with huge distances between settlements, therefore in such regions uninterrupted power generation is more important than elsewhere. The Nyagan state district power plant built by Fortum in the northern latitudes and fitted out with Siemens power-generating equipment reliably meets the growing power needs of the region.

The city of Nyagan lies north of the 62nd latitude, i.e. less than 500 kilometres from the polar circle. The annual mean air temperature here is 3 degrees below zero. In winter the mercury falls below minus 40, and the difference between winter and summer temperatures is 80 degrees, the same as on Mars. In December the daylight in these parts lasts just over 5 hours. There is not a single human settlement along the whole length of the way from Khanty-Mansiysk to Nyagan. Due to these harsh conditions, reliable power supply is essential for life in the region.

The main consumers of power here are oil industry workers. Yet even more in need of electricity are the hospitals, schools, and other social infrastructure. Before the Nyagan state district power plant was commissioned there were no large power plants in the eastern part of Khanty-Mansi, and the energy so vital for the region had to be imported from the Surgut state district power plants located 400 kilometres away.

The Nyagan state district power plant is Russia's largest thermal power station built from scratch, and it is also one of the most technologically advanced in the country. It includes three combined cycle power units with a total capacity of 1302 MW, and it is capable of supplying electric power to one half of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Region. The most advanced heat generation technologies have been implemented at the station which exhibits some of the highest performance figures among all Russian power plants in the same class.

The Nyagan state district power plant's heart is the power island. It is based on innovative equipment produced by Siemens. Company supplied SCC5-4000F power plants for all three power units of the Nyagan state district power plant, each of which consists of an SGT5-4000F gas turbine, SST5-3000 steam turbine, SGen5-2000H generator and SPPA-T3000 Control System for process automation. Siemens also provides long-term maintenance services for the equipment.

Cutting-edge technology for combining the turbines and generator with the state-of-the-art power plant control system ensures high performance, reliable power generation, and low prime electricity costs for the Nyagan state district power plant. Thanks to the high degree of automation the station personnel can control all processes remotely.

It is important for us that the Nyagan state district power plant contains the most advanced equipment and embodies the best current operational technologies, including further maintenance of the station's high-performance ‘power island’

In northern Russia, sustainable power supply is crucial. Harsh winters with extremely low temperatures and little daylight mean local citizens are in constant need of consistent lightning and heating. The Nyagan state district power plant built by Fortum in the northern latitudes and fitted out with Siemens equipment ensures reliable power supply. The power station includes three combined cycle power units with a total capacity of 1302 MW, and it is capable of supplying electric power to one half of the Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Region.
