In 1866, Werner von Siemens studied spinning dynamos and quickly recognized their limitations. Their output was just enough for electric telegraphs. Siemens realized that the double-T armature he had developed for his telegraphs opened the way to more powerful dynamos. “The effects should turn out to be enormous,” he wrote to his brother William.
