Why overvoltage protection devices?

Every year, several hundred thousand cases of damage caused by lightning strikes and transient overvoltages are recorded in Germany alone, resulting in economic losses totaling millions of euros. Overvoltages are among the greatest risks to modern electrical installations and sensitive electronic equipment.

SENTRON overvoltage protection devices provide a powerful, comprehensive protection solution. They reliably divert hazardous overvoltages, reducing the risk of system failures, equipment damage, and consequential fire damage. The coordinated three-level protection concept ensures optimal energy dissipation and can be flexibly adapted to different applications, network configurations, and regulatory requirements.   • Type 1 lightning arrester – Protects against overvoltage and high currents triggered by direct or indirect lightning strikes
  • Type 2 surge arrester – Protection against switching and induced overvoltages
  • Type 3 surge arrester – Protects electrical loads (consumers) against overvoltage

Supplement to the lightning arrester

Per IEC 61312-1, approximately 50% of lightning current goes to ground via the lightning arrester. Up to 50% of the remaining current enters the building and needs overvoltage protection measures.
