Town of Shediac
The Shediac Smart Energy project demonstrates the potential of a smart grid project to benefit consumers, communities, utilities and the environment.
The Shediac Smart Energy project demonstrates the potential of a smart grid project to benefit consumers, communities, utilities and the environment.
The Shediac Smart Energy project, is a real-life pilot of an evolved energy system platform. Key components include:
This pilot provides a blueprint to citizens, governments and utilities across Canada and the world of how to build sustainable communities.
The vision of Shediac as a net-zero community can't be achieved by one entity.
It takes a partnership of committed organizations. Siemens Canada, NB Power and the Town of Shediac are working together towards a greener future.
They are building a more sustainable, economical and resilient energy system in Shediac.

Government of Canada Pension Centre, Shediac
In this pilot, about four hundred Shediac residents generate, store and share electricity as well as manage their energy consumption. Smart technology, including battery storage, smart thermostats, and smart water heaters, provide the means to control residents' energy use and modify their behaviour.
These residents save on their energy bills and have increased resiliency. NB Power's newly constructed 1.6MW 5000 panel solar farm powers two sizeable buildings in town. One of them, the Federal Government of Canada's Pension Centre, is the first net-zero building that the Government of Canada owns and operates.
Roger Caissie - Mayor of the Town of Shediac

Smart technology helps residents become more knowledgeable and have a greater ability to achieve their personal sustainable goals.
Being able to see both their energy production and consumption is a big motivator to changing personal behaviours associated with energy use.

Pascal Haché, resident of the Town of Shediac
As a founding partner in the Smart Grid Atlantic program, NB Power is creating the utility of the future - a cleaner, more resilient and reliable power grid that engages consumers to actively participate in the energy transition.
Through this project, NB Power is giving participants options about how they produce, consume and store energy.
