Integrate shop floor data to SCADA with Industrial Edge

Seamlessly integrate heterogeneous data sources and systems from the shop floor and smaller-scale SCADA systems into a highly scalable and reliable architecture, one that supports overarching SCADA and enterprise-level applications.

Overview

Illustration showing a connected SCADA Openness system architecture with steps numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, representing the workflow.

A future-proof architecture combining Industrial Edge, Unified Namespace (UNS), WinCC OA, and other SCADA providers delivers secure, standardized, and vendor-agnostic data integration from field-level devices to enterprise systems, ensuring flexibility, scalability, and operational reliability.

Detailed architecture

Industrial Edge acts as the central orchestration platform for secure and standardized data acquisition from field-level devices and vendor-agnostic automation equipment.

Data is published to an industrial-grade MQTT broker built on Unified Namespace (UNS) principles, ensuring a harmonized and consistent data structure across all layers.

WinCC OA serves as the overarching SCADA system, providing advanced visualization, event management, and built-in redundancy for high availability and operational reliability.

Description

For extended interoperability, the use of e.g. Ignition, WinCC Unified or Wonderware as HMI & Integration Suite complements the architecture with flexible HMI, alarm handling, and web visualization capabilities. Its modular, platform‑independent design and wide protocol support make it easy to connect legacy and modern systems, speed up development through reusable components and scripting, and deliver responsive operator interfaces across desktop and mobile devices. With built‑in alarm pipelines, historian connectivity, and the Perspective module for web/mobile visualization, Ignition helps standardize operational views and analytics across the plant. Centralized deployment, strong role‑based access controls, and extensible integrations also help reduce operational overhead and time‑to‑value.
