The largest turbine in Brazil's sugar and alcohol industry
Sugar and ethanol plants generate energy from sugarcane bagasse or straw for many years. Recently, new technologies in steam turbines are drastically improving this activity and increasing its profitability.
The Delta Sucroenergia Group, which operates three plants in the state of Minas Gerais (Brazil), needed to modernize its energy generation process and, for that, it sought for solutions in the market. Operating in the area of sugar and ethanol production, the company intended to increase the energy generated from the biomass derived from sugarcane, guaranteeing energy for own consumption, besides marketing the surplus to the National Interconnected System, increasing the company's revenue.
The company realized that as important as receiving proposals for the implementation of new solutions, are the need and benefits of having a previous analysis of the thermodynamic mass and energy balance. Focus: Ensure the reliability and performance of the equipment, to achieve the customer's goals. The prospect was designed not only to replace existing equipment at the plant - two turbines that generated 15 MW of power each - and to increase generation capacity, through a larger and more efficient turbine.
The response to the Delta Plant challenge was the SST600 steam turbine, a model with recognized performance in Brazil and worldwide, making the project a pioneer case in two important aspects. The first of them: The turbine of the Delta Plant is the first in the sector directly coupled to the generator, delivering increased operational safety and greater energy efficiency. The second: An innovative layout for the installation of the set, in an external environment, reducing the expenses with civil works significantly.
The new turbine will allow the Delta Plant to generate more than 376 MWh per year, which would be enough to supply a city such as São Bernardo do Campo. The city of São Bernardo do Campo has 740,000 inhabitants and is located in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, the largest city in Brazil.
It is also the largest turbine in the sugar and alcohol sector in Brazil. With a power of 73.5 MW, the plant not only fully meets the demand for internal processes, but exports around 56MW to the external grid.
With the high technological level of the turbine, the Delta Sucroenergia Group guaranteed a strong reduction of costs in the long term, since the equipment would not require maintenance for a period of at least five years.
