Ingenuity for a sustainable future

Snowtown II produces clean, emission-free energy – along with a range of other lasting benefits for South Australia.

Onshore wind power

A towering achievement

Snowtown II is one of the most modern wind farms in the country. While producing enough electricity for 180,000 South Australian homes, it also provides employment, training and investment opportunities for the local community and the whole state.

Snowtown II Wind Farm

Power from the peaks

Up to 430 metres above sea level and less than 50 kilometres from the coast, wind is a constant feature in the Barunga and Hummocks Ranges of South Australia. Standing tall on the peaks and ridges, 90 Siemens wind turbines gracefully turn – generating clean, reliable power for homes and businesses and helping to drive the state towards its renewable-energy targets.

For the wind farm owners, Trustpower, it was Siemens’ advanced Direct Drive technology that proved decisive in their search for a supplier. The 270 MW wind farm – including the 275 kV high-voltage substation – is a full turnkey solution. In addition to the design, supply and erection of the turbines, Siemens also managed the construction of roads, the associated civil works and the connection to the grid.

In partnership with Trustpower, the South Australian Government and the local community, Snowtown II is the largest turnkey solution Siemens has ever implemented for an onshore wind project – delivered on budget and ahead of schedule.

We want to have a future for our kids. We want them to grow up in a clean environment…and make sure they have the opportunities and jobs that flow from investing in these cutting-edge technologies.

Advanced turbine technology

Siemens' cutting-edge Direct Drive technology significantly improves reliability and reduces maintenance costs. This high level of efficiency and availability is helping South Australia achieve its plan to get half its electricity from renewable energy sources by 2025.

Overview

Setting new standards

A full-service partner from beginning to end: Snowtown II was the largest turnkey solution that Siemens has ever provided for an onshore wind project.

Construction began in August 2012 and involved about 500,000 man hours. Siemens extensively utilised South Australian businesses, awarding local supply and services contracts in excess of $75 million.

The blades range in length from 49 to 53 metres. Each wind turbine weighs more than 330 tonnes.

Snowtown residents have overwhelmingly embraced the wind farm. Siemens and Trustpower worked closely with the community to ensure direct local benefits.

Siemens also managed the completion of the civil works – incl. the construction of about 50 km of new roads, foundations, and the installation of electrical and communication networks. Only then could the turbines be erected.

Each rotor spins at approximately 16 rpm. This results in a tip speed of more than 300 km/h - about as fast as a Formula 1 race car or a Siemens high-speed train.

“We want to represent ourselves to the world as a progressive state that is able to meet the challenges of the future – which is dealing with carbon pollution.” Jay Weatherill, South Australian Premier
