Everywhere, from infrastructure and industrial installations to private households, transformers are crucial to delivering the right power reliably to the point of use. Their tasks are twofold: to step voltages up to levels that allow power to be transmitted efficiently, and to step them down again to the levels that systems and equipment need in order to operate. Siemens offers transformers for every capacity requirement, voltage, cooling method, and operating mode. Our portfolio ranges from traction transformers for rolling stock to compact distribution transformers and high-performance power transformers with ratings in excess of 1,000 MVA.
Smaller transformers – in the 5 to 30 MVA range, with a maximum service voltage of 145 kV – are mainly used as network transformers in distribution networks. At the last transformation stage from the power plant to the consumer, distribution transformers provide the necessary power for systems and buildings.
Medium power transformers with a power range from 40 to 200 MVA and a voltage of 72.5 kV are used as network and generator step-up transformers. Transformers in the power range above 200 MVA are generator and network intertie transformers with off-load and on-load tap changers or a combination of both.
HVDC transformers are key components in the HVDC converter and inverter stations located at the ends of long-distance HVDC transmission lines or sea cables. These transformers act as coupling elements between the connected AC grids and rectifiers, and are necessary for adapting the voltage.
Transformers are typically cooled and insulated using mineral oil or silicone oil. Wherever distribution transformers have to assure the utmost safety in areas frequented by people, GEAFOL cast-resin transformers are the recommended solution. With GEAFOL, the limitations of liquid-filled transformers are avoided, but the proven characteristics such as operating safety and service life are retained.Special safety precautions such as coolant reservoirs are not required. The GEAFOL cast-resin transformer is primarily used wherever compromises in safety are not an option, for example in high-rise buildings, hospitals, road and underground railway shafts, offshore installations, mines, tunnels, industrial buildings, power plants, and wind turbines.
