The Code of Conduct for Siemens Suppliers defines the requirements suppliers must meet for their stakeholders and the environment. They include the obligation to protect the environment and constantly optimize standards of environmental protection. We think an important step is to increase energy efficiency not only in our own operations but among our suppliers, thereby reducing carbon emissions. We created the Energy Efficiency Program for Suppliers (EEP4S) for this purpose.
Over 900 of our suppliers had conducted a self-assessment by the end of fiscal 2012. The results confirm that we have pointed out potential and effective measures to reduce emissions here. Roughly 18% of the self-assessments show the potential to save 14 to 20% and roughly another 56% the potential for 9 to 14%. That corresponds to a savings potential of approximately 5 million tons of CO2 equivalents. Another 1,000 suppliers are due to be integrated in the program in fiscal 2013.

We believe that the requirement that suppliers reduce environmental contaminants and constantly optimize environmental standards also includes water use since water pollution control and water treatment are fundamental elements of resource conservation. In addition, resource-preserving use of water by our suppliers is part of the Sustainability Detection Modules and part of our Energy Efficiency Program for Suppliers.
