A competitive, globally balanced and localized network of suppliers is vital to Siemens’ success, but it also brings great challenges and responsibility.
Every year we source goods and services to a value equal to almost half of our revenue from some 90,000 suppliers worldwide. When selecting a supplier, Siemens looks not only for the most competitive and innovative candidate, but also sets high standards for sustainability. To enable that, we have implemented comprehensive processes and systems in our supplier management to integrate our suppliers effectively in our Sustainability Program.
The basis for this is our Code of Conduct for Siemens Suppliers, which defines the requirements demanded of our suppliers. We take suitable measures to verify that our suppliers enforce the guidelines. However, we not only aim to obligate suppliers to observe the code, but also support them actively in their further development and in implementing the guidelines. That also includes efficient use of available resources.
In fiscal 2012, we made particular efforts to enhance the occupational safety standards for suppliers at our project construction sites. Specifically, we require a detailed risk assessment in respect of every site, an appraisal of the risks identified and measures to minimize them. In 2012, we also trained relevant suppliers in India in health and safety at construction sites.
