We record and monitor environmental impact and environmental performance with a worldwide environmental information system.
A key element of our environmental management is the monitoring of environmental impact and environmental performance. We record and monitor the relevant parameters through a global environmental information system, the Siemens Environmental and Technical Safety Information System (SESIS). All indicators presented here cover the entire worldwide company.
At Siemens, our obligation to report on environmental aspects is based on the relevance of the information. This relevance is defined according to resource consumption, emissions, and waste volume. If certain thresholds are exceeded, a location must report the data in SESIS.
In fiscal 2011 we received 379 environmental reports from our locations in 46 countries via SESIS. In fiscal 2011 the basis for our reporting again changed significantly in comparison to the previous year: 24 new locations were integrated and 16 were removed.
We monitor our environmental impact with absolute criteria, for example carbon dioxide emissions in tons. To measure the environmental performance of production locations that are required to implement an environmental management system, we also calculate normalized, portfolio-adjusted key performance indicators (KPIs). We use plant revenue as the normalization factor (production manufacturing costs). This enables us to evaluate the company’s environmental performance consistently over time, independent of portfolio changes made by our plants.
The first stage of our environmental program came to a successful conclusion at the end of fiscal 2011. For example, environmental management systems that meet the ISO 14001 standard have been rolled out throughout the company at all locations requiring them. In addition, we have boosted our environmental performance in the areas of energy, energy-induced carbon dioxide emissions, water use and waste, and have achieved most of the targets we set ourselves.
We have also established new targets for the years ahead, and intend to improve Siemens' environmental performance further in the next stage of our environmental program.
One corporate goal was to roll out environmental management systems (EMS) at all locations that are obligated to have one. We achieved this goal. 256 locations have an externally certified EMS and another 65 were certified on the basis of internal audits.
In fiscal 2008 the number of locations with environmental management systems fell; this was largely due to the carve-out at the time of Siemens VDO Automotive (SV), whose entire locations were certified.
