Mireo – the new regional and commuter train platform from Siemens

Cities and urban centers are creaking under the strain of their ever-increasing population density. Even today, traffic on city streets crawls along at less than 20 kilometers an hour. No wonder, then, that so many people are turning to public regional and urban mass transit. Operators have their work cut out if they are to meet the growing demand for mobility. Mireo, the new regional and commuter platform from Siemens, has been developed specifically to fulfill these needs. As a scalable articulated train featuring bogies with inside bearings, it uses less energy. And thanks to improved aerodynamics, it is considerably more lightweight than predecessor models. The vehicle concept provides for different car body lengths and train configurations, from two to seven-part trainsets with train lengths of between 50 and 140 meters. Trains can achieve maximum speeds of 140 to 200 kilometers an hour. DB Regio was the first regional transport operator to take advantage of the new platform, commissioning Siemens in March 2017 to supply 24 Mireos for the Rheintal network.

The Mireo for regional and suburban passenger services: an adaptable, attractive solution for premium-class mass transit.

Maximum comfort and convenience wherever you look

Easy-to-understand pictograms guide passengers helpfully around the new Mireo. Emergency controls are color-coded and easily visible. The color scheme and material concept are based on proven materials, the durability and maintainability of which have already been put to the test over many years of use.

Mireo – an innovative platform for mass transit

The commuter train is energy-efficient, flexible, profitable, and available within a short lead time. It meets the requirements of operators, buyers and travelers alike to deliver an innovative, high-capacity passenger transport solution that is a cut above the rest.

Uncompromising flexibility for regional and commuter transport

Mireo is the new regional and commuter platform that delivers uncompromising flexibility. Compared to predecessor vehicles, it maximizes capacity by offering more seats with the same train length or the same number of seats with a shorter train length – depending on demand. What's more, the fleet can be adapted in line with fluctuating requirements.

"Empty tube concept"

The components of the Mireo are installed only under the floor or on the roof wherever possible. This maximizes the space available for passengers, which can also accommodate bicycles, prams and wheelchairs if required.

Further Information

DB Regio orders 39 regional multiple units from Siemens for the Rhine Valley network

South-west Germany is counting on Siemens: from 2020 onward, DB Regio AG will be operating its Rhine Valley rail network exclusively with new trains from Siemens. The German Railways order covers 15 Desiro HC and 24 Mireo trains in total, and goes hand in hand with a restructuring of the rail transport services in the Rhine Valley. There is a clear separation between a rapid train system for fast cross-regional services and a regional suburban rail system (S-Bahn) with stops at all stations. The Mireo will be deployed as a regional train (RB) service along the line section from Offenburg via Freiburg to Basel/Neuenburg (Switzerland) as well as in the Kaiserstuhl area on Sundays between Freiburg and Endingen/Breisach. The line section from Karlsruhe via Offenburg and Freiburg to Basel (Switzerland) will be operated with the Desiro HC as a regional express service.

The double-decker Desiro HC is particularly characterized by its already proven reliability and very high availability and is very popular with passengers because of its large capacity and comfort.

In June 2020, the Mireo is scheduled to begin service in the Rhine Valley network in Southwest Germany that is operated by the DB Regio Regional Business Unit of Deutsche Bahn. DB Regio AG has ordered a total of 24 Mireo trains, the first order Siemens Mobility received for the newly developed platform.
The Mireo will be used for regional service on the Offenburg – Freiburg – Basel/Neuenburg (Switzerland) route during the week and operate in the Kaiserstuhl region from Freiburg to Endingen/Breisach on Sundays. The three-car trains have 220 seats and a maximum speed of 160 km/h.

Siemens Mobility receives first order for battery-powered trains

Landesanstalt Schienenfahrzeuge Baden-Württemberg (SFBW) has ordered 20 Mireo Plus B trains from Siemens Mobility. The two-car electric trainsets with 120 seats can operate on rail routes with or without overhead power lines thanks to their battery hybrid drive, and are scheduled to operate in Network 8 of the Ortenau regional system. The contract also includes maintenance of the trains by Siemens Mobility for a period of just under 30 years.

The three-car trains have 220 seats and a maximum speed of 160 km/h. Passengers will have spacious seating, CO 2-controlled air conditioning, and multi-purpose areas with ample space for up to 27 bicycles. Passengers with restricted mobility will have barrier-free access to the toilets. All car doors are equipped with a sliding platform that automatically bridges the gap between the platform and train to ease passenger access.

First painted car body – final assembly has begun

DB Regio ordered a total of 24 Mireo trainsets in February 2017. This was the first order for vehicles using Siemens' new regional trainset platform following the product's launch in the summer of 2016.

First painted car body – final assembly has begun

The vehicle is conceived as a scalable articulated train. All technical components are installed either beneath the floor or on the roof, so that every single centimeter of the interior space can be used to enhance passenger comfort and convenience. The three-car trains have over 220 seats and a sufficient number of multipurpose areas.

First painted car body – final assembly has begun

DB Regio Baden Württemberg will exclusively operate new trains in southwestern Germany beginning in 2020. Along with the 24 Mireo trains, 15 Desiro HC (double-decker trains) will also run on the Karlsruhe – Offenburg – Freiburg – Basel route as regional expresses. These changes will completely restructure rail offerings in the Rhine Valley: There will be a clear separation between a fast train system for trans-regional operations between major cities and a regional train system similar to a suburban railway (S-Bahn) that stops at all stations.

First painted car body – final assembly has begun

Painting of the first car bodies for the Mireo trainsets planned for the Rhine Valley has been completed. A little over one year after the order was received, final assembly of the trains has begun at the Siemens factory in Krefeld.

Compared to predecessor vehicles, the Mireo maximizes capacity by offering more seats with the same train length. The three-car train features 220 seats in total.

      Designed specially for Baden-Württemberg

The interior of the Mireo can be reconfigured and the color scheme customized again and again without a great deal of expense and effort. In addition, the cantilever seating allows the passenger compartment to be cleaned cost-effectively. The Mireo for Baden-Württemberg is decked out in the traditional state colors: black, yellow and white.

Timeless – yet modern and forward-looking: that sums up the design of the new regional and commuter train platform for Baden-Württemberg. Spaces flooded with light and featuring friendly colors make for a truly pleasurable passenger experience on the journey from Offenburg to Basel. The traditional state colors are an integral feature of the design concept.

Getting around easily in the Rhine valley

It's also ideal for cycling tours: the components of the Mireo are installed only under the floor or on the roof wherever possible, maximizing the space available to passengers and providing plenty of room to accommodate bicycles, prams and wheelchairs too.

Traveling in style through the Rhine valley

The train's interior is designed to convey a generous sense of space. Pleasant lighting and a color scheme tailored to Baden-Württemberg make the Desiro HC unique.

      High-quality and practical

The first-class compartment in the Desiro HC has 16 seats with reading lamps and folding tables. WLAN and sockets are available throughout the train, making it easy and pleasant for you to work as you travel from Karlsruhe to Basel/Neuenburg.

      Perfect for taking a trip

The Desiro HC is a great choice if you want to explore the Rhine valley: the four-car multiple unit has bicycle spaces, barrier-free access for wheelchair users, and space for prams in the end cars.
