Together with employees, customers and business partners, the Siemens Electronics Manufacturing Plant in Amberg (EWA) is celebrating its 25th anniversary on September 12-13, 2014. Among the products Siemens has produced at this location since it was founded in 1989 are the Simatic programmable logic controllers (PLCs).

Siemens has been named the most sustainable company in its industry group. The Swiss investment company RobecoSAM compiles the internationally renowned Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) each year for Dow Jones, a provider of financial market indices. In this year's DJSI, Siemens ranked first in the Capital Goods Industry Group, which includes about 350 companies from seven sectors. Siemens was able to reaffirm its rating from the previous year and achieved a very high total score of 93 out of a maximum of 100 points (after earning 93 points last year). This means that Siemens has been represented every year since the DJSI was first published 15 years ago.

Siemens Healthcare plans to divest its hospital information system business (HS) for US$ 1.3 billion (around €963 million) in cash to the US-based company Cerner Corp. The HS business is focused on administrative hospital IT and electronic patient records, thus different from information technology that enhances the capabilities of imaging modalities and laboratory equipment.

In the third quarter of fiscal 2014, Siemens posted strong results in most areas, which were affected by challenges in the Energy Sector. Net income rose to €1.4 billion, from €1.1 billion in the prior-year-period. Corresponding earnings per share increased to €1.62 year-over-year from €1.27. Total Sectors profit rose to €1.7 billion, but was held back by ongoing profitability challenges within the Energy Sector. For comparison, Total Sectors profit of €1.3 billion one year earlier had been burdened by €418 million in "Siemens 2014" charges.

At its meeting yesterday, Erlangen City Council approved a decision of principle giving the go-ahead for an architectural design competition for the new Siemens Campus in Erlangen. This marked a further milestone for the project, which is important not only to the city but to the entire metropolitan region of Erlangen / Nuremberg.

The reconstruction work on the interior of the Ludwig Ferdinand Palais, a registered historic building at Wittelsbacherplatz in Munich, has now reached the halfway mark. Siemens developed the remodeling plans in close cooperation with Bavaria's Office for the Preservation of Historic Places. In 2013, the City of Munich granted a building permit for the project.

Siemens' central research department and the electric vehicle manufacturer StreetScooter agreed today to equip an electric car with an innovative electronic and software architecture. The associated technology was developed during the RACE project. Siemens is the consortium leader of the research project, which receives funding from the German Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy. For the first time ever, the architecture will make it possible to retrofit functions such as electrical brakes and systems such as lane-keeping assistants using a plug-and-play process like on home PCs.

Siemens Healthcare is selling its microbiology business to Beckman Coulter Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Danaher Corporation. The activities of the microbiology business include systems for the identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing (ID/AST) of microorganisms.
