Energy Sector / Fossil Power Generation Division
Erlangen, Germany, 2012-Sep-18
Siemens has been awarded an order for the turnkey supply of the Panda Sherman Power Project in Sherman, Texas. This is the second project awarded with Panda in Texas following the Temple order announced in July. The company will supply the natural-gas-fired combined-cycle power plant (CCPP) in consortium with its partner, Bechtel. The purchaser for this advanced power plant is Panda Power Funds headquartered in Dallas, Texas. The multi-shaft combined-cycle plant will be a Siemens Flex-PlantTM 30, with a gross installed electrical capacity of 758 megawatts (MW). This plant will be among the cleanest fossil-fueled plants in the U.S.A. with carbon monoxide (CO) emissions less than 10 parts-per-million (ppm), and nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions less than 2.0 ppm. Once completed end of 2014 the generating station will be able to supply the power needs of approximately 750,000 homes in the North Texas area. The order volume including a long-term service agreement is approximately USD300 million.
The natural-gas-fired Panda Sherman CCPP will be located at the Progress Industrial Park 3 in South Sherman. Siemens will deliver the power island equipment, including two SGT6-5000F gas turbines, one SST6-5000 steam turbine, two SGen6-1000A generators, one SGen6-2000H generator, the SPPA-T3000 instrumentation and control system as well as two Benson heavy duct- fired heat recovery steam generators manufactured by NEM. A long-term service agreement has also been signed for the main generation components. Bechtel will be responsible for the engineering and procurement for the balance of the plant, and the installation, construction and commissioning of the facility.
"With this, as our second project in Texas based on Flex-Plant technology this year, and our two Flex-Plant projects in California at Lodi and El Segundo, we are reassured of the US market's need for clean fossil power solutions with fast ramping capability to balance intermittent renewables on the power grid", said Roland Fischer, CEO of the Fossil Power Generation Division at Siemens Energy. "The Siemens Flex-Plant technology was specifically designed for this purpose, and is an important part of our energy portfolio inclusive of renewable sources", added Fischer.
Siemens' combined-cycle Flex-PlantTM 30 is an environmentally friendly solution with additional benefit from a fast start gas turbine that reduces overall plant startup emissions. Power generation can commence within ten minutes of startup, and full base-load power production in less than one hour. Gas turbines at Panda Sherman, like those at Panda Temple are equipped with a Shaping PowerTM feature which enables higher power output on higher temperature days.
The gas turbines, steam turbine and generators will be manufactured in the Siemens factory in Charlotte, North Carolina, which is the main production facility for Siemens 60 Hz power generation equipment.
Highly efficient and flexible combined-cycle power plants (CCPP) are part of Siemens' Environmental Portfolio. In fiscal year 2011, revenue from the Portfolio totaled about €30 billion, making Siemens one of the world's largest suppliers of eco-friendly technologies. In the same period, our products and solutions enabled customers to reduce their carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by nearly 320 million tons, an amount equal to the total annual CO2 emissions of Berlin, Delhi, Hong Kong, Istanbul, London, New York, Singapore and Tokyo.
The Siemens Energy Sector is the world's leading supplier of a complete spectrum of products, services and solutions for power generation in thermal power plants and using renewables, power transmission in grids and for the extraction, processing and transport of oil and gas. In fiscal 2011 (ended September 30), the Energy Sector had revenues of EUR24.9 billion and received new orders totaling approximately EUR31.8 billion and posted a profit of EUR3.9 billion. On October 1, 2011, the Energy Sector had a work force of more than 82,000. Further information is available at: http://www.siemens.com/energy
