The heart of the new generator is transistors made from the semiconductor material silicon carbide – a chemical compound of silicon and carbon.

Transistors made of silicon carbide, as developed in a research collaboration of Siemens and Russian scientists, manage to concentrate five kilowatts of power on a surface of just six square millimeters – a similarly powerful electron tube would require a volume of approximately ten liters. The advantage of silicon carbide is that the electrons can move in the material much more freely than in silicon. This allows ten-fold higher frequencies in the microwave range. They also dissipate the heat better and therefore can absorb more power. Siemens is one of the pioneers of silicon carbide technology and is now introducing it into corresponding applications.

One exception is the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technology. Instead of water, the waste heat heats an organic medium of carbon, fluorine, and oxygen.

Since 2011, Siemens has been conducting research in conjunction with Moscow State University on generators for heat recovery with the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) technology. Unlike the classic steam cycle, ORC does not involve circulation of water, but instead an organic medium which provides for optimum efficiency especially at low waste heat temperatures and low output, and which allows for a compact design.

Researchers from Siemens Corporate Technology in Russia, in close partnership with the St. Petersburg State Polytechnical University, have developed an early warning system for dikes. The Urban Flood System has been under development since 2009 and is based on dikes that are studded with sensors inside and outside. The system continuously measures the parameters such as water and air pressure, expansion, or the humidity and temperature differences inside and outside the dike.
