Outside Moscow, a new city of science is being created: Skolkovo. Its open nature is to attract scientists from Russia and abroad alike. In the future, they will carry out research on topics such as information technology, biotechnology, energy efficiency, medical technology, nuclear technology, and aerospace. The "Hypercube" (pictured) is a cube-shaped futuristic building of the Russian architect Boris Bernaskoni which on seven floors houses a conference center, start-ups, and offices of Skolkovo partner companies such as Siemens, IBM, and Cisco. Siemens technologies make the building especially energy efficient.

In 2010, Siemens entered into a strategic partnership with Skolkovo. Siemens intends to invest around € 40 million in a research and development center for up to 150 scientists. The research work is already underway: For example, Siemens researchers are developing new microwave generators with Russian and German scientists.

Since the opening of the Hypercube in September 2012, it has been the focal point of the research city. A 250-m ² "media facade" shows image films about Skolkovo. It consists of nearly 60,000 three-color LEDs from Osram subsidiary Traxon Technologies. Many other Siemens technologies make the building especially energy efficient.

A look behind the facade of the glowing cube shows the video screen LEDs of Osram subsidiary Traxon Technologies in detail. These put a variety of content on the facade of the building. But the LEDs are not the only eco-friendly element of the city of science: When the ecological model city is complete, vehicles with internal combustion engines will not be allowed inside. Residents and visitors are to travel on foot, by bike, or in electric vehicles. The latter will be part of Russia's first smart grid – like the Hybercube, which contains a state-of-the-art power distribution solution from Siemens.

The Hypercube building is controlled by a building management system from Siemens which regulates the air-conditioning system, the lighting, and the power distribution. The goal: The Hypercube should be as economical, ecological, ergonomic, and energy efficient as possible. It is currently being certified as one of Russia's first buildings to meet the LEED standard (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) of the U.S. Green Building Council.

Apr 09, 2013 | Power supply for all of Skolkovo

From the end of 2013, two Siemens substations, each with 63 MW of power, are to ensure that in the future all residents and businesses of the innovation city Skolkovo are reliably supplied with electric power. Gas-insulated transmission cables of the latest Siemens generation will be used. They allow large amounts of electric power to be safely transported underground on a low-loss basis – a new development in Russia.

In 2006 in Skolkovo, the Moscow School of Management opened as one of the best training centers for Russia's business elite, and in the future Russia's leading research and innovation center is to be built on the 380-hectare site – embedded in a new city for up to 25,000 residents. Schools, day care centers, and hotels are planned in addition to convenient residential buildings.
