Wallace & Tiernan, a company belonging to the Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S), is now offering a new device for measuring and controlling the most important quality parameters of drinking water and process water. The modular “MFC-Depolox 5” measuring system processes signals generated as a result of water analysis and process control. Up to four sensors for measuring free chlorine, total chlorine, chlorine dioxide, ozone, fluoride, conductivity, redox voltage or the pH value can be connected to the device. In addition, there are two terminals which can be used to connect instruments that detect external process parameters, for example, for controlling the volume rate of flow. Temperature measurement and compensation are integrated as standard functions. The concentrations of ozone or chlorine dioxide can still be measured even if additional oxidizing agents are present at the same time.
Operators of water supply plants must verify that the water they supply meets the legal requirements. In the food and beverage industry as well, the use of high-quality process water is a central aspect of quality assurance. Continuous measurement of parameters such as the pH value, temperature, redox voltage, and conductivity makes it possible to react immediately to any fluctuations occurring in the quality of the water. If additional disinfection is necessary, the concentration of chlorine dioxide, chlorine or ozone must also be monitored permanently in accordance with DIN 19643 and DIN 2000.
MFC-Depolox 5 uses software-regulated closed-loop control concepts which enable complex control tasks and procedures to be performed. This makes it easier for the user to comply with legal stipulations, for example. Depending on the requirements, fixed-setpoint control, ratio control or a combined form of control is possible. A combined form of control is especially suitable for dealing with rapid process changes. Five preset applications not only accelerate start-up but also facilitate operator control.
For pH-value correction of the addition of disinfectant, it is possible to connect metering pumps, actuators or actuating elements with an analog input to the device. Moreover, MFC-Depolox 5 can be connected to higher-level visualization systems or, via web technology, to data management systems. The RS485 interface can be used for connecting the ChemWeb server, the OPC server and CMS software. Additionally, the RS232 interface may be used for direct printer control or for downloading configurations or updating firmware.
