Driverless metro from the Louvre to Arc de Triomphe
More than one hundred years old, Metro Line 1 constitutes an east-west route almost 17 kilometers long and transports as many as 725,000 passengers per day. Since 2011 the first trains have been operating on this line without drivers – thanks to rail automation by Siemens. Technically speaking, an unprecedented feat: For it is the first time that such a heavily traveled underground line has undergone conversion without disrupting ongoing service. Driverless operation will cut the annual energy consumption by 15 percent – during peak periods increase line utilization by up to 20 percent.
