Our employees confront some of the many challenges the world faces right now on a daily basis. Learn more about real-life work at Siemens from people who know it firsthand: our employees.
You don’t have to be an expert to understand that some jobs are tough challenges – like building a water plant in the desert. But for P. Raguraman it is daily routine. He is one of the engineers working hard to build the Independent Water and Power Production Plant (IWPP) in Shuaibah, a groundbreaking Siemens project 200 kilometers south of the Saudi Arabian port town of Jeddah. “This is a 900 megawatt steam power plant combined with a desalination facility,” he explains. “It provides highly efficient energy generation and is equipped with one of the world’s most advanced flue-gas cleaning plants.”
P. Raguraman’s first point of contact with Siemens was when he worked as a third-party inspector for an international certification agency. The mechanical engineer was impressed by the quality of the work and when opportunity knocked, he joined the company. One important factor for him was Siemens’ comprehensive green portfolio, in particular the combination of cutting-edge alternative energy technologies and highly efficient conventional ones.
“Nonconventional energy sources are the best way to green energy,” he says. “But you can’t achieve that overnight. You have to work on ways to improve existing ways of energy generation also.”
For the growing population in Saudi Arabia, the IWPP in Shuaibah, which will provide millions of people with clean energy and water, is a step in that direction. And for P. Raguraman, it's more proof that he made the right career choice: “I’m turning my dreams into reality here.”
