Our strategy is geared towards four global megatrends – demographic change, urbanization, climate change and globalization – and their effects on society and our business. Corporate governance based on the principles of sustainability forms an integral part of what we understand by profitable and successful entrepreneurship.
Going forward, our intention is to make more intensive use of the opportunities offered by sustainable business practices. That is one reason for our above-average level of expenditure on research and development, the aim being to tap new growth potential as an integrated technology company.
A prime example of this is the Siemens Environmental Portfolio, where the company is already a global leader. Our commitment to sustainable development is clearly evident in our expertise in “green” solutions. What is more, by shouldering social responsibility, the company is ensuring long-term value creation for its investors, customers, employees, business partners and other target groups.
Ratings & rankings
Independent organizations, too, have acknowledged the extent to which we factor sustainability into everything we do. For many years, Siemens has held a leading position in both the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) and the Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI).
2012
For the fifth year in a row, the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) honored Siemens by including it in the top group of its Global 500 Carbon Disclosure Leadership Index (CDLI) in 2012. Scoring 98 out of a possible 100 points, Siemens again achieved an outstanding result this year, rising to second place in the “Industrials” sector. What is more, Siemens again reached the uppermost performance band (A/A-) in the supplementary Carbon Performance Ranking, earning a place among those companies with a performance of 85 and higher out of a possible 100 points.
Siemens is convinced that climate change represents one of the biggest challenges facing humankind in the 21st century. At the same time, our tasks are to ensure economic growth, fight poverty, and help all people gain access to adequate supplies of energy and water. These are issues that government, society and the business world need to address. On the one hand, climate change poses a threat to the global economy. On the other, tackling climate change presents business opportunities, for instance for technology suppliers like Siemens, whose energy-saving technologies contribute toward lowering greenhouse gas emissions.
About the CDP:
September 2012:
Siemens AG has been a member of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index since the latter was established in 1999. In 2012, the company was honored for its sustainable business practices for the thirteenth successive time. Siemens' score of 92 points (2011: 90) represented its best overall achievement thus far, making it Supersector Leader for the first time, leading the category “Industrial Goods and Services”. The company is also Sector Leader for the fifth time running, currently in the “Diversified Industrials” sector.
The Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes (DJSI) are a cooperative venture between Dow Jones Indexes and SAM Group. The indexes combine – in the interests of sustainability – the expertise of a leading index provider with the pioneering spirit of an investment company, and satisfy the growing demand for professional, objective and trustworthy sustainability benchmarks. The DJSI comprise 19 supersectors and 58 sectors, which cover those companies in individual sectors that achieve the best results across three dimensions: economic, ecological and social.
