Siemens’ first project in Uruguay was completed in 1872 and involved the construction of the first submarine telegraph system that linked Montevideo with Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
Major milestones in the country included the introduction of Siemens products, such as telegraphs and electrical equipment, under the representation of Geiger de Bary & Cía. in 1897, tramway construction and rail electrification in Montevideo in 1903, and installation of the country’s entire telecommunications system in 1931.
In fiscal 2012 (October 1, 2011 – September 30, 2012), Siemens’ sales to customers in Uruguay amounted to nearly EUR 19.7 million and new orders totaled more than EUR 11.3 million. Siemens currently has around 30 employees in Uruguay.
Siemens has been active in Urugay since 1872. Effective October 1, 2010, Siemens A.G. consolidated its presence and activities in Uruguay by establishing a local Siemens Company.
The Diagnostics Division was awarded one of the biggest contracts in the Uruguayan market covering the areas of clinical chemistry, immunology, microbiology, hematology and hemostasis. In this project, Siemens is installing a new automated clinical laboratory for Sanatorio del Sindicato Médico del Uruguay (CASMU). The contract scope also includes an automation workcell with immunochemistry. The project has made Siemens the new national market leader.
