The company has been involved in most of the high-speed rail projects developed in Spain over the past twenty years. In fiscal 2011, Siemens in Spain scored major successes in all three Sectors.
In fiscal 2011 (October 1, 2010 – September 30, 2011), Siemens’ sales to customers in Spain amounted to around EUR 1.442 billion and new orders totaled to EUR 1.466 billion. Siemens currently has just over 2,880 employees in Spain.
Siemens officially launched its operations in Spain when the first Siemens & Halske agency, with responsibility for both Spain and Portugal, opened its doors in Madrid in 1895. Siemens Schuckert joined the group in 1910 by acquiring Industria Eléctrica, S.A. and its factory in Cornellà (Barcelona). This plant remains one of Siemens’ most important facilities in Spain.
Siemens is providing project management for the installation of electrical systems in Line 2 of the Santo Domingo Metro in the Dominican Republic, and will also install signalling and safety equipment including an automatic train protection system. The project has a value of EUR 35.8 million. Siemens won a long-term maintenance contract, worth EUR 10 million, for the high-speed rail line between Madrid and Seville. The company is also providing the catenary system for the Motilla – Albacete – Valencia section of the high-speed Levante rail line, worth EUR 5.97 million, and the catenary system for the Vigo – Coruña section of the “Eje Atlántico” high-speed rail line, worth EUR 10.77 million.
