Siemens celebrated its 150th year in South Africa in 2010 and continues to be a leading player in the infrastructure, economic and social development. Siemens offers a wide range of solutions and services in Southern Africa, where its Industry, Energy and Healthcare Sectors occupy leading positions. In fiscal 2011, Siemens in South Africa scored major successes in all three Sectors.
In fiscal 2011 (October 1, 2010 – September 30, 2011), sales to customers in South Africa amounted to EUR 489 million and new orders totaled almost EUR 680 million. Siemens currently employs 2,000 people in South Africa.
Siemens’ activities in South Africa date back to 1860, when the company installed South Africa’s first telegraph line between Cape Town and Simonstown. The company also completed the country’s first renewable energy project in 1892, when it was a technology supplier to the Molteno Reservoir in Cape Town. Today, Siemens continues to be a major player in the country’s infrastructure, economic and social development.
Siemens was awarded the Kusile electrical and auxiliary construction project. The scope of work includes the installation of all lighting, earthing, cable and racking equipment as well as all terminals required to commission the plant and its units. In addition, the project includes the storage and installation of equipment such as low-voltage (LV) and medium-voltage (MV) switchgear, auxiliary power transformers and direct current (DC) system UPS, worth a total of approximately EUR 100 million.
