The company has played an active part in the economic development of Portugal for over 106 years. Siemens Portugal manages centers of competence for areas such as power generation, power transmission, smart grids, medium voltage, airport terminals, and IT for the Healthcare Sector. These centers are currently staffed by around 100 highly qualified employees. Siemens has two production sites and more than 57 collaborative interfaces with universities, institutions of higher education, research centers and partners with over 42 R&D projects and three submitted patents.
In fiscal 2012 (October 1, 2011 – September 30, 2012), Siemens’ sales to customers in Portugal amounted to approximately EUR 270 million and new orders totaled almost EUR 252,6 million. Siemens currently has about 1,460 employees in Portugal.

The company’s first major breakthrough in this market was the erection of four airports based on the CapacityPlus® concept in the cities of Soyo, Dundo, Saurimo and Luena.
The re-powering of the Picote hydropower plant to increase its capacity to 246 MW, an infrastructure project that is part of the National Program for Dams, was completed in 2012. The project required an investment of EUR 56 million by EDP, the Portuguese electricity utility, and included all mechanical and electrical installations for the new plant.
