Siemens has been active in Mesoamerica for 55 years. Over the last three years, Siemens invested approximately EUR 190 million in Mexico. In 2012, the company announced a number of new investments in Mexico including EUR 5 million to open a new surge arresters plant in Queretaro, and EUR 4 million to open a new plant for electric starters and control components in Zapopan, Jalisco. The Company also invested EUR 18 million to open its first research & development center for low-voltage equipment in Mexico. Siemens Mexico showed very strong social engagement by supporting the “Turn your city pink” campaign – a global breast cancer prevention awareness program. The company attracted one of the highest number of participants worldwide. As part of the program, Siemens donated US$5 million dollars to breast cancer research institutions for each uploaded image: Siemens Mexico contributed more than 3,000 pictures.
In fiscal 2012 (October 1, 2011 – September 30, 2012), Siemens’ sales to customers in Mesoamerica amounted to EUR 982 million and new orders totaled almost EUR 1.236 billion. Siemens currently has about 7,370 employees in the Mesoamerica region, which comprises Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean.
Siemens’ activities in Central America date back to 1956, when Siemens in Nicaragua was founded in connection with the installation of the country’s first automated telephone system. Siemens in Costa Rica was founded one year later with an order to provide four locomotives for the railway line linking San José and Puntarenas on the Pacific coast. Siemens’ activities in Mexico date back to 1894. The company’s earliest prominent projects included providing the first electric lighting for the Paseo de la Reforma Boulevard in Mexico City and constructing the Necaxa hydro power plant, which is still in operation.
In November 2011, Siemens won a contract to provide a Simetal EAF Quantum electric arc furnace for Talleres y Aceros S.A. de C.V. (TYASA) in the metal technologies segment. The furnace will consume less energy and gas for a reduced environmental impact, and increase production capacity to enable TYASA to boost its market share from 7.5 percent at present to 9.6 percent.
