Siemens has been active in Pakistan since 1947 and is the country’s No. 1 supplier of high-voltage grid stations, switchgear products and systems, power and distribution transformers, and network consultancy. The company is also actively involved in Pakistan’s university education. Siemens runs a three-year apprenticeship program at its facility in Karachi. Last year, two leading engineering universities were provided with state-of-the-art automation labs. This gives engineering students a unique opportunity to gain access to the best knowledge and finest equipment available. Siemens also actively helped flood victims; the relief provided in both cash and kind through global company efforts amounted to approximately EUR 2.5 million to date. The latest project in this relief effort was the installation of five water filtration plants in villages in Sindh; each plant can provide 10,000 liters of clean drinking water a day.
In fiscal 2012 (October 1, 2011 – September 30, 2012), Siemens’ sales to customers in Pakistan amounted to more than EUR 138.3 million and new orders totaled around EUR 136.9 million. With a workforce of 2,220 employees, Siemens Pakistan is one of the most important employers in the country and the largest employer of engineering graduates, including women.
Siemens' overall involvement in the region dates back 140 years. The company's name first became known through the construction of the Indo-European telegraph line from London to Calcutta in 1870. Siemens' first office in what is now Pakistan opened in 1922. The Siemens Pakistan Engineering Company Ltd. was founded in 1953 as a private company, and in 1963 the company was reorganized as a public limited company.
Siemens Pakistan has been providing answers to the country’s demand for sustainable infrastructures and urban solutions. Among the company’s achievements were the completion of an airfield lighting solution for Pakistan’s first greenfield project, the Benazir Bhutto International Airport in Islamabad; the supply, installation, testing and commissioning of an integrated building management system (IBMS) for Dolmen Mall, Karachi, the biggest shopping mall in Pakistan; and providing smart grid turnkey automation solutions to the Karachi Electric Supply Company Load Dispatch Center.
