Siemens Australia and New Zealand is focusing strongly on the renewables sector and has positioned itself in Australia as the leading supplier of technologies for renewable energy. The federal government’s impending carbon tax legislation, which is designed to cut carbon pollution by five percent below 2000 levels by 2020 creates a significant opportunity for the expansion of wind farm projects nationally. Siemens Australia clebrated its 140 year anniversary in 2012.
In fiscal 2012 (October 1, 2011 – September 30, 2012) Siemens’ sales to customers in Australia and New Zealand amounted to approximately EUR 1.4 billion, and new orders totalled more than EUR 1.97 billion. Siemens currently has about 2,200 employees in Australia and New Zealand.
Siemens has been operating in the region since 1872 and celebrated its 140 year anniversary in 2012. As a technology-based solutions provider, Siemens is working with customers to find solutions to the region’s most pressing issues in the areas of water, energy, the environment, healthcare, productivity, mobility, safety and security.
Siemens was awarded its first wind farm project by electricity supplier TrustPower, to supply a full turnkey solution for Snowtown II in South Australia, 150 km northwest of Adelaide. Snowtown II will be the state’s largest wind farm and will supply more than 270 MW of energy to South Australia. Siemens will install the first gearless drive system, halving the number of moving parts and reducing the complexity of the turbine significantly.
