Siemens celebrated its 150th year in South Africa in 2010 and continues to be a leading player in the infrastructure, economic and social development. The recently opened Siemens Wind Power Center of Competence for Africa and the Middle East will serve not only the needs of South Africa, but also those of the African continent and the Middle East. Demonstrating its continued commitment to South Africa, Siemens, together with the Mvezo Development Trust, is building the Mandela School of Science and Technology in Mvezo. The environmentally friendly school will provide much-needed education for approximately 700 students.
In fiscal 2012 (October 1, 2011 – September 30, 2012), sales to customers in South Africa amounted to almost EUR 470 million and new orders totaled almost EUR 504.5 million. Siemens currently employs approximately 1,870 people in South Africa.
Siemens’ activities in South Africa date back to 1860, when the Company installed South Africa’s first telegraph line between Cape Town and Simonstown. The Company also completed the country’s first renewable energy project in 1892, when it was a technology supplier to the Molteno Reservoir in Cape Town. Today, Siemens continues to play a significant role in the modernization of the country’s rail, energy and healthcare infrastructures.
Offering sustainable technologies for metropolitan areas and their infrastructures, Siemens commenced work on Phase 1 of the Gauteng railway signalling project for the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA). The project, valued at approximately EUR 90 million, includes a new nerve center for centralized rail traffic management. To help improve the reliability of South Africa’s electricity infrastructure, Siemens won orders to refurbish automation systems and generator protections at three of Eskom’s power plants.
