In 1856, Siemens’ founder Werner von Siemens was personally involved in laying a submarine cable from Cagliari to Algiers. The company began full-scale operations in Italy in 1899. More than 25 gigawatts (GWs) of installed power plant capacity and nearly 100 percent of Italy’s national power distribution grid were managed from Siemens’ control centers in Milan. Further, Siemens launched a strategic partnership with Enel, Europe’s second-largest utility company, to develop a smart microgrid for the Milan Expo 2015.
In fiscal 2012 (October 1, 2011 – September 30, 2012), Siemens’ sales to customers in Italy amounted to over EUR 1.94 billion and new orders totaled almost EUR 1.8 billion.
Siemens currently has about 3,860 employees in Italy.
Siemens in Italy was officially founded on January 1, 1899. The company’s first projects in Italy included the management of electrical companies in Alessandria, Pisa, Perugia and Livorno, the installation of a telephone system in Venice and single-phase locomotive trials in Lombardy. Today, Siemens Italy has developed into a strong and highly respected group of companies working to support the development of the country. A commitment to corporate citizenship is embedded in the company’s business activities.
The Energy Sector continued its collaboration with Enel Green Power to construct wind turbines with a total capacity of up to 1,200 MWs between 2011 and 2014. Sorgenia Green, the Sorgenia Group’s renewable energy company, awarded Siemens a contract to supply five SWT-2.3-93/80m wind turbines for its Ricigliano project in the south of Italy and a 12-year service contract for the 17 SWT-2.3-MW wind turbines installed at the San Gregorio Magno wind farm.
