The company has been active in Ireland since 1874. The construction of most of Ireland’s power plants, including the landmark Shannon hydroelectric scheme in 1929, and the provision of the country’s first computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners are among its major projects.
In fiscal 2012 (October 1, 2011 – September 30, 2012), Siemens’ sales to customers in Ireland amounted to around EUR 103.7 million and new orders totaled more than EUR 107.7 million. Siemens currently has about 260 employees in Ireland.
The history of Siemens in Ireland dates back to 1874, when the first direct transatlantic telegraph cable was laid from Ballinskelligs Bay, County Kerry, to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Siemens Limited was formed as a registered company in Ireland in 1925 and has been involved in many key infrastructure projects ever since, beginning with the Shannon hydroelectric power scheme in 1926-29. Major projects include the construction of most of Ireland’s power plants, supplying the overhead catenary system equipment for the DART rail system, supplying Ireland’s first CT and MRI scanners, installing the SIMATIC automation system in the Guinness Brewery and designing and constructing the baggage handling system for Dublin Airport’s new terminal 2, which opened at the end of 2010.
In fiscal 2012, Blackrock Clinic installed Ireland’s first Siemens Aera MRI scanner. The scanner uses the very latest innovations in magnetic resonance imaging to provide superb high-resolution images. Its size and design improve patient comfort, reduce feelings of claustrophobia and accommodate a large variety of body shapes and sizes. The super-short magnet allows many examinations to be completed with the patient’s head outside the bore.
