In fiscal 2012 (October 1, 2011 – September 30, 2012), Siemens’ sales to customers in Algeria amounted to more than EUR 137 million and new orders totaled almost EUR 359 million. Siemens currently has about 500 employees in Algeria.

The history of Siemens in Algeria dates back to 1857, when Werner von Siemens participated in the first undersea telegraph cable installation between Europe and Africa. The line connected Cagliari, the capital of Sardinia, with Annaba in Algeria. Siemens established its first representative office in Algeria in 1962, the year of the country’s independence, and subsequently founded a Regional Company in 2002. This was followed by the founding of Siemens Spa, a joint stock company, in 2005, and the consolidation of the Regional Company in 2006. In 2004, Siemens AG acquired a 51-percent stake in ESTEL Rail Automation Spa, a subsidiary of the National Company of Railway Transportation. Since then, Siemens Spa has recorded continuous growth, especially with the new opportunities that the country presents and the new Divisions that are being established. As a result, the company has implemented a new strategy and gathered all the activities together under the Regional Company.

Siemens has been awarded a contract to provide long-term maintenance services at Algeria’s first solar-combined cycle hybrid power plant. The order was placed by Abengoa for its 150 megawatt (MW) solar hybrid plant operating at the Hassi R’Mel natural gas field. The contract includes preventative and corrective maintenance for two SGT-800 gas turbines, which Siemens installed in April 2011. The service contract for the gas turbines will help to ensure five years reliability and predictable maintenance costs for Abengoa at Hassi R’Mel, one of the world’s most innovative power stations.
